Flow Consistency of Process Models

The consistency of flow is a measure which captures the extent to which the layout of a process model reflects the temporal logical ordering of the activities involved in a business process.

This experiment aimed at characterize the human perception of the consistency of the flow in business processes. We asked participants to grade some process models according to the consistency of their flow. In particular, we asked them to rate each model using the 7-point Likert scale provided ranging from 1 (“no consistency at all”) to 7 (“complete consistency”).

We created two versions (“A” and “B”) of the same survey, with models presented in the opposite order. Then, we randomly distributed the two version of the survey.
