Title. Enabling Flexibility in Process-aware Information Systems: Methods and Technologies

Abstract. The economic success of enterprises increasingly depends on their ability to react to changes in their environment in a quick and flexible way. Companies have heretofore identified business agility as a competitive advantage to address business trends like increasing product and service variability and faster time-to-market and process-aware information systems (PAISs) are getting increasingly popular. In contrast to traditional information systems, PAISs rely on an explicit description of business processes. In response to the need for flexible and easily adaptable PAIS, different paradigms and technologies for realizing flexible PAIS have emerged. Examples include adaptive, constraint-based and data‐driven approaches. This talk will present a comprehensive review of the challenges that exist for flexible PAIS, and it will give insights into concepts, paradigms and technologies for their realization. Flexibility issues are discussed along the phases of the process lifecycle (i.e., design, modeling, configuration, execution, monitoring, and evolution). Main focus of the talk will be flexibility requirements and enabling technologies for pre‐specified processes, the currently predominant paradigm for supporting business processes.
